The following A-Z list should help you to decide which container to put you recycling and waste items in. If there is an item not listed here that you would like included in the A-Z list please contact us and we will update this page.

A

Aerosols

Empty deodorant cans can be placed in the recycling bin. Empty spray paint cans should be placed in the general waste bin.

 

Asbestos

Householders (but not business contractors) can take to Penallta HRC -  Maximum amount of 6 bags or 6 sheets. Specialist contractors should be consulted.

Ashes (coal fires & log burners)

Please allow ashes to cool. Once cooled, ashes should be bagged and placed in the general wase bin.

Building materials

Household Recycling Centres will accept small quantities of household building materials (less than five bags) free of charge – delivered in a car (maximum of 6 bags). Traders will not be allowed to dispose of building materials.

Cans

Clean steel and aluminium cans/tins should be placed in the recycling bin.

Cartons (Tetrapak)

Cardboard

Clean thin card (such as small cardboard boxes and cereal boxes) should be placed in the recycling bin.

Carrier bags

Re-use carrier bags for shopping trips. Alternatively, they can be taken to a local supermarket for recycling. 
Find your nearest recycling point.

Car Batteries

Household Recycling Centres – delivered in a car. Traders will not be allowed to dispose of car batteries. 

Carpets

Household Recycling Centres or collected as a bulky waste collection

Car Parts

Household Recycling Centres – delivered in a car. Traders will not be allowed to dispose of car parts. 

CDs

Sell, donate or take to Household Recycling Centre.

Chemical Drums

HAZ REM Environmental or other local hazardous removal providers.

Christmas cards

Recycle paper based cards in your household recycling collection. Any embellishments such as ribbons or glitter cannot be recycled so should be removed first by simply tearing off that section. Batteries should also be removed from musical cards and disposed of  at your local Household Recycling Centre.

Christmas trees (real)

Household Recycling Centre or cut up into manageable pieces and place out for garden waste collection.

Clothes

Some charity shops may accept coat hangers. Alternatively place in the general waste bin.

Computers

Sell, donate or take to Household Recycling Centre. Clothes in a poor condition can be made into dusters.

Cookers

Good condition electrical cookers will be accepted by the Furniture Revival. If it cannot be reused, arrange collection as a bulky waste item or take to a Household Recycling Centre

Crisp packets

Crockery

Sell or donate. Can be donated. Broken crockery should be wrapped and placed in the general waste bin.

Egg boxes

Cardboard/plastic egg boxes can be placed in the recycling bin.

Can be composted in your home compost bin or placed in the food waste caddy.

Electrical items

Envelopes

Can be reused by sticking a piece of paper over the address. Can also be placed in the recycling bin.

Fluorescent lighting tubes

Foil

Clean foil food trays, clean pie cases and clean kitchen foil can be placed in the recycling bin. Unclean foil should be placed in the general waste bin.

Food

Place in the food waste caddy for collection.

Christmas - we’ll collect additional food waste but it must be in a bag and placed on top of your caddy. 

Fridges/freezers

The Furniture Revival offer a collection service at a small cost

Reusable items will be accepted by the Furniture Revival & Penallta Reuse Shop.
If in a poor condition, arrange a bulky waste collection if the items are too large to take to the Household Recycling Centre

Garden/green waste

Place leaves, dead flowers, grass cuttings, weeds, twigs, hedge cuttings and small shrubs in the garden waste bag for weekly kerbside collection.

Hard plastic such as coat hangers and boxes should go in the general waste.

Hazardous waste

This should be dealt with carefully. If this cannot be taken to a Household Recycling Centre you will need to arrange disposal with a reputable, licensed private company

Hot Tubs

Please contact the manufacturer who should offer a take back scheme.  

I

Ink cartridges

General waste bin.
Some schools recycle ink cartridges – alternatively some manufacturers will take back used cartridges for recycling.

Jewellery

Donate to charity shops or sell

Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants / weeds

General waste – small quantities.

Jigsaws

Donate to charity shops, Penallta Reuse Shop, residential homes or schools.

Junk mail

Contact the mailing preference service to stop unwanted junk mail. If you still receive it, it can be placed in the recycling bin

Five feet lengths can be collected using the bulky waste collection service (please note – there is a charge for this service) or taken to Household Recycling Centres for composting

Tyres

Tyre fitters should provide a take-back service when replacing old for new. Residents can take up to 10 tyres to Penallta HRC.

Please note: You can dispose of a wide range of materials at our household recycling centres using a car. We have a permit system in place if you wish to use a van or trailer. These sites are not available for commercial waste or building contractors.
